When In Manila (http://www.wheninmanila.com) – Lifestyle, Travel, and Fake News? Hilarious. I also like the way they integrate the power of Facebook in their homepage. No, make that in practically EVERY page. Talk about INFLUENCE.
The Creative Dork (http://thecreativedork.com) – Interesting blogroll treatment. And I’m biased in favor of The Little Prince. Plus, a healthy number of comments.
NomNom Club (http://nomnomclub.com) – I wonder if the blogger is somehow related or connected to the owners of Red Ribbon. Nice photos. I now have this urge to gobble up comfort food.
FaceBuko (http://facebuko.com) – How can this not be influential? Filipinos practically spend all their time in FB. ;-p
tara na! (http://tara-na.com) – People love food (especially affordable eats). Food talk online? Definitely on the way up the influence ladder.
The Thirsty Blogger (http://www.thirstyblogger.com) – Hetong pantulak. It’s a drink blog that will definitely catch the eye of the consuming public. But the blogger will eventually branch out to other topics. I hope that doesn’t, uhm, dilute his influence in the future.
Project 52 Weeks (http://www.project52weeks.com) – Interesting. 52 weeks, 52 short films. As more people consume online video, I wouldn’t be surprised if their online popularity will eventually transport them into the world of local television.
Kusina Maria: A Filipina’s Food and Cooking Blog (http://www.kusinamaria.com) – Mouth-watering photos. Plus recipes and battle-tested cooking tips!
NoBenta: I Love the 90′s! (http://no-benta.blogspot.com) – Coming in at Number 9, a blog about the 1990s. My friends often talk about the 80s, but this decade-after group is making its mark online. Get to know this generation.
Manila Shopaholic (http://manilashopaholic.com) – People still have time to go online, and also go shopping? This blog gives people hope, and that is a key ingredient when it comes to having influence. Makapag-shopping na nga!

Wow… Food, drink, and shopping. I was debating whether or not to include an Entertainment or Pinoy Showbiz type of blog in the list, but I figured Twitter and Facebook are already doing a good job.

Didi Paterno is the founder and editor of The Blogging Advertiser (TheBloggingAdvertiser.com), where she merges her love for blogging along with her profession as an advertiser.

In short, with TBA, bloggers will learn more about advertising while advertisers will learn more about blogging, thanks to someone who is smack dab in the middle of those two worlds.

I highly recommend other bloggers to check out Didi’s posts in TBA. As for the advertisers, I encourage you to take up blogging and reach out to your soon-to-be fellow bloggers.

You will be amazed with the insights you get once you start blogging and participating in various blogger events, whether virtually or in the physical world.

And while it will help greatly if advertisers pick up a few technical skills in the world of blogging, bloggers will also benefit if they acquire “technical skills” in the realm of advertising.

For example, please learn about copywriting.

While Didi writes that Bloggers are NOT advertising people, she clarifies that we’re talking about education or profession.

If you look beneath the surface, however, every person (regardless of education or professional persuasion) is an advertiser and a marketer. I mean, just look at your kids or your bunso when she asks you to buy her a snack.

The point is, every blogger is innately a marketer and advertiser. But not every blogger is consciously aware of that… yet.

iBlog6 Day 2

Congratulations once again to Janette Toral, JJ Disini and the entire team behind iBlog6! It was good to see old friends and meet other bloggers for the first time, and to also hear the presentations of the different speakers on the 2nd day of iBlog6…

Hannah Villasis (www.FlairCandy.com) talked about blogging. Her presentation slides made use of great-looking graphics and photos.

Vince Golangco (www.WhenInManila.com) inspired people to go and try video blogging. The key is to ignore the naysayers and to just go out and express yourself.

(NOTE: Go watch the video me singing boom boom pow by black eyed peas (my version), which was uploaded to YouTube by hitmanbreakeroftheye.)

Juned Sonido (www.PinoySnapshot.com) showed us different kinds of cameras, and shared the advantages of photo blogging.

Emerson Bañez (bangus.clickmomukhamo.com) showed examples of blog policies that will help protect companies in a world where more and more employees start blogging.

Racquel Cagurangan (www.PinkPutter.com.ph) talked about blogging, passion, and golfing. She also talked about mobile blogging and now my head is bursting with mobile marketing ideas that I’m excited to test soon!

During lunch, I listened to stories from Joan Piñon and Jane Uymatiao.

Marck Ronald Rimorin (www.marocharim.com) talked about political blogging and the need to move away from merely jumping on bandwagons, and to gravitate towards preserving memory so that we can move people to action and address unresolved issues.

Noemi Dado (www.BlogWatch.ph) talked about Social Media and Election Blogging, and shared info about the challenges they faced and what they did to help improve voter education in the Philippines.

Jinoe Gavan (www.takbo.ph) talked about launching successful blog contests.

(Mike Abundo looked for concrete ways to solve the issue of visitor drop-off days after the end of an online contest. Jinoe advised bloggers to publish compelling content that will keep readers coming back.)

Joseph Gonzales (www.BatangBaler.net) talked about how blogging had an impact on Baler, Aurora (not Baler, Quezon). His deadpan humor had the audience laughing every 3 minutes or so. Here’s to more local, and local-local bloggers who can help attract attention not only to their own provinces, but even to their streets.

Marhgil Macuha (www.Macuha.com) gave an overview of SEO. It was good to find out that one of the top probloggers of the Philippines uses mostly free tools to optimize their blogs.

While I was looking for some kind of complicated, secret sauce for SEO success, I liked his straightforward approach. It’s not rocket science afterall.

It was good to meet and speak with Maki Eduardo, Sire Arevalo, Jam Mayer Flores, Jab Escutin and Soraya Peralta (GeekPinoy.com), Roy Dela Cruz, Paige, Josh Liao and Lizz Buenaventura who both blog at YESNOMEH.com, Mica Rodriguez, Fitz Villafuere, Rommel Copuyoc, Jay De Jesus, Aileen Apolo – De Jesus, Dine Racoma, Pocholo Gonzales, Neva Arboleda-Santos, Ginger Arboleda, EJ Arboleda, Lorinda Lhen De Guzman, Michille Herrera, Jonas Diego, Marcelle Fabie, Micha, Atty. Michelle Dy (please let me know if she has a blog), Flowell Galindez, Carl Valenzona, Didi Paterno, May Saturno, Eugene Villar, Alvin Tan, Peter Baltazar, Menard Osena, Ryan, Azrael Coladilla, Sean General, Wilson Almendras, John Bejo…

Happily stumbled upon the Pinoy Book Bloggers group in Facebook, and I joined it because I like their description:

For Filipino book bloggers and aspiring book bloggers. Let’s spread the habit of reading and blogging about books and meet our kababayan book bloggers!

Don’t you sometimes wish you would pick up a book once again and read it? I mean, how long has it been since you last read something longer than 3 pages? Something printed and not floating on your monitor?

Yet when you walk into book stores you wonder: What book should I read this time?

It’s amazing how these folks find the time to read mountains of books.

WordPress Pinoys, Plurk, Towels

It’s good to hear that WordPress Pinoys is back. This way, we can handily find out who are the, in a way, more active bloggers from the Philippines.

I accidentally stumbled upon a partial list of Pinoys who use WordPress over at PinayAds.com, and slowly got reacquainted with my fellow Filipinos who enjoy blogging with the help of WP.

I don’t quite remember how I found my way to PinayAds.com, but it was probably based on the watermark in a photo in some Multiply site, which I found out when I checked someone’s Plurk profile page.

Found that profile page because of a lively Plurk thread which was talking about bloggers and 5 kgs of towels.

It’s strange how lots of seemingly unrelated things get mooshed into one delightful tangle that is the web.

Fitz Villafuerte — “One mistake I commonly see in other bloggers is that they blog because they just want to make money online. Although there is nothing wrong with wanting this, I believe that one should primarily blog because he or she genuinely wants to write and share something to the world.”

I’ll be visiting Junnel Animo‘s Featured Pinoy Blogger category in his blog ah! to get to know more bloggers in the future.

Okay… so what’s a common mistake this blog post is making? Well, it’s not really a mistake if you’re just into free-wheeling, pressure-free blogging. Or if you’re simply interested in branding or promoting a blogger’s name (or site name).

But if you and like-minded bloggers are interested in generating an extra, semi-passive source of income from the internet, a common mistake is linking to posts and using in the anchor text (the word or phrase that is clickable) words that refer to names or even blog post titles.

For example, I’ve just linked to various webpages above using full names (i.e., Fitz Villafuerte, Gino Carteciano, Dexter Panganiban) or site names (i.e., FitzVillafuerte.com, BigBaddie.com, TechAtHand.net).

This is perfectly fine, and people searching for those blogger’s names (or site names) will eventually find their web sites… because the search engines will know those sites based on the names of the blog site owners.

In other words, I am helping people who already know the names of those bloggers to find their sites. But what about people who do not know those names? How will they find the sites of Fitz, Gino, Dexter, and Junnel?

In future blog posts here in Viloria.net, we will feature various bloggers, and we will correct the common “mistake” when it comes to linking to those blog sites. That correction will help more bloggers attract new visitors, and will lead to more traffic for everyone.

Yes, in the interconnected world of the web, our actions affect one another. You can choose to just write for yourself, but you will astonishingly discover that it’s a whole lot more fun when you maximize the use of the web by connecting with one another.

Anyway, here’s the tip: Watch how we feature you and other bloggers, and you will see one of the secrets of succeeding (on both psychic and financial levels) on the internet.

So, the funniest Pinoy blog in 2008 is Chiksilog.com. I wonder why the 5th funniest, Mr. D, no longer has his blog at DearDiarya.blogspot.com

Bloggers’ Choice Award – Macuha.com

The 2008 Philippine Blog Awards now allows people to vote for their blog of choice, and I choose Macuha.com (by Marhgil Macuha). Actually, I like more than one blog, but the rules state that we may choose only one blog.

Is each blogger allowed to vote only once? Or it is one vote per blog of each blogger?

Anyway, you can review the Bloggers’ Choice Mechanics over at PhilippineBlogAwards.com.ph

Why do I choose Macuha.com? I like it because of its impact on its readers in terms of social, political, and economic aspects. Well, Macuha.com does not delve too much with politics, but when a blog touches on those three areas, it indicates that the blog can sustain itself. In other words, it’s not just a fad. Plus, his blog does exert some amount of influence on others.

Marhgil freely shares tips on SEO and how to make money online. In addition, he also writes about topics outside the realm of MMO, which gives his blog a nice, balanced feel. I just hope, though, that his recent website uptime issues are quickly resolved so that more people can appreciate what he has to offer online.

BatJay Book Launch at Fully Booked

BatJay launches his Batang Kaning Lamig book at Fully Booked (in The Fort) as part of the megalaunch of the Fox Literary House.

I heard this deep, booming voice. Kamusta, kamusta! Then BatJay has a quick chat with his publisher, and soon after he excuses himself to greet his mom.

Even before he arrived at Fully Booked, I heard his mom speaking with some of the people at the venue. You can tell how proud she is of her son. And I’m not just talking about her son’s successful booklaunch.

You know, some people are simply down-to-earth humble. I’ve attended several book launches, and this is the first time I’ve seen anything like this…

There, do you see it? Look closely…

Nakakangawit din yun, di ba? Imagine, you come straight from the airport, weather jetlag upon jetlag, head on over to Fully Booked, greet all your friends and relatives, stand around talking with your well-wishers, and then segue into an instant book-signing session… and not even ask for a chair.

It’s no wonder he has lots of friends. And it’s not surprising that his book sold out. (Too bad I missed his first book, Kwentong Tambay.)

I was pleasantly surprised. It isn’t everyday you bump into someone who likes to write. And blog. And follow communities such as WordPress Pinoys.

It’s fascinating how you can get to know a person you used to often exchange “Hi’s” with a little bit better thanks to Facebook. It’s strange how you get to know someone more, after you no longer see her.

Such is the power of the internet, I guess.

I like the way he mixes gadget reviews along with posts about writing.

This is another example of a blogger who started in BlogSpot, and then decided to get a domain name. Something you should, folks, especially if you’re interested in the long-term earning potential of your writings online.

Mga Hunahanang Layaw (translated: Random Thoughts) caught my eye because part of the lyrics of a Visayan song my dad taught me recently is the word “huna-huna” (mind/thoughts).

And my curiosity was rewarded, because the MHL blog has an entry which features a song sung in Bisaya: Bato Balani Sa Gugma (Gozos Sa Novena Sa Sto. Niño). Interestingly, you’ll find that some people upload MP3 files in a password-protected folder in Drop.io, a “simple private exchange.”

What makes Drop.io interesting is that you can allow people to collaborate or even add notes to the files you upload, or if you will allow them to simply view the file. The service says they will store your file for up to one year, although you can always go back and re-upload.

Why is it free? I don’t know… Perhaps the whole concept of a “private exchange” or “secrets” catches the fancy of certain people, enough for them to offer this free service.

When you say “barangay” in the Philippines, you will evoke visions of groups of people who live near one another. Not just near each other. Their houses may even stand cheek by jowl along the asphalted street.

This family of seven could not have chosen a more apt name. Barangay. I like it!

I didn’t realize Jing could write. And how! (Jing, may tinatago ka palang talent, ah.)

Anyway, I hope they feature more of the wonderful photos they’ve taken with their Canon Powershot S5 IS.

Which reminds me… I still have to send them their Christmas 2007 photos.

La Bigueña (the lass from Vigan) is a blog by Elena Cardinez (http://elena.cardinez.com). She considers herself a reluctant lawyer and amateur weblogger based on her Twitter profile.

Since she’s been blogging from April 2007, I don’t consider her an amateur blogger. Especially not after seeing that Google has indexed around 307 pages of her site.

She likes to read, though I find her visions of spinsterhood rather premature.

I do hope, however, that she’ll write more about Ilocos Sur.

You Got Tech

Aileen Apolo launches You Got Tech (www.YouGotTech.com) a videoblog or vlog project for 2008 where she will explain tech stuff to non-techies.

It’s great to see more Pinoys try out vlogging, complete with stronger lighting. Usually, we use webcams and rely on the light emitted by our monitors. Now, it looks like more vloggers are using softboxes.

Will vlogging fade similar to the podfading effect we observed in 2007?

Well… Who cares? Just go out there, experiment, and have fun.

Speaking of fun, I burst out laughing when I reached the 2:02 mark of the video featured in Happy New Blogging Year. Let’s just say Aileen chose an interesting name for her blog.

Spotted a new Pinoy blog at JoeBreaker.com, and enjoyed the video shown in Blast from the past.

There are a lot of other Pinoy vloggers that you’ll get to meet, thanks to Coy’s Discovering Pinoy Vloggers in 2007. (Hmmm… this kind of blogging is so liberating, for some reason. I’m slowly starting to develop a theme that Viloria.net will more or less “focus” on.)
