Panginorin is a Tagalog or Filipino word that means kalangitan (the heavens).

It can also refer to the clouds (mga ulap).

Panginorin is also the name of the tribal chief of the Tagalog Karilaga tribe. He was one of the suitors of the Daragang Magayon, the heroine in the legend of Mt. Mayon in Albay, Bicol, Philippines.

We don’t know why some webpages define panginorin as ambient. They’re probably referring to the atmosphere?

You’ll find this word in Kabanata 47 (Ang Dalawang Senyora) of Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere:

Dumating ang kura at pinatitigil ang dalawa, ngunit pasinghal na binulyawan siya ng alperes…

Since bulyaw means “shout”, and binulyawan means “shouted at”, “pasinghal na binulyawan” may seem redundant.

The key point here is pasinghal contains the element of anger. May halong galit.

You can shout because of a variety of reasons. To warn someone of danger, to simply call someone’s attention, or to cry out for help.

But if you’re referring to an angry way of shouting, you most likely are referring to pasinghal.

Kulapol (ku-LA-pol) refers to the dirty part of any object (ang maruming bahagi).

Hence, pagkakakulapol describes something that is dirty, soiled, stained, marked, or perhaps even vandalized (graffiti).

Other pages online show the word pagkukulapol, which means the act of making something dirty (paglalagay ng dumi).

Dagison also means “to gather” such as when you gather clothes from a clothesline, or when you put together money or coins. Imagine yourself compressing all those clothes into the space formed by your arms.

Based on this, “dagisunan” in the above passage could refer to “a gathering” or to a place where people squeeze themselves in as tightly as possible so that others may fit in a kalesa or jeepney.

Afterall, there are very few jeepneys going to that place.

Sa Tagalog / Filipino: Maaaring ang dagisunan ay tumutukoy sa mga taong nagsisiksikan sa isang lugar, o kaya’y sa mga taong nag-iipod sa loob ng isang dyip o kalesa, sapagkat madalang nga ang mga dyip duon.

Panaghoy (or taghoy) is a cry. As when someone cries out for mercy, or compassion, or even if you’re missing someone and you cry out his or her name.

If an animal is caught in a trap, and it cries out for help or for its mother, that’s another example of “panaghoy.” Or a parent, crying out to the heavens while he or she carries her unmoving or stillborn baby.

It is a salty shriek of desolation. You know, the kind of wide-mouthed scream that makes it easy for your tears to find their way into your throat. It is the sound of utter nothingness; when everything seems to have vanished from your world.

Interesting… sagpang (pronounced sag-PANG) is a noun which refers to the act of grabbing something with one’s teeth (as when a dog suddenly bites a piece of meat).

On the other hand, sagpang (prounced SAG-pang) is a verb which refers to running after an enemy’s vehicle.

Perhaps the act of grabbing the enemy vehicle makes one’s hands look like the teeth of a dog grabbing a piece of food.

From this, we can see that sag-PA-ngin means: habulin ang sasakyan ng kalaban (chase the enemy vehicle).

Other forms are:

i-SAG-pang = itugis ang sasakyan ng kalaban.
su-MAG-pang = tumugis ng sasakyan ng kalaban.
si-NAG-pang = tinugis ang sasakyan ng kalaban.

Weird, ba? We wonder why the UP Filipino dictionary makes reference to an enemy vehicle. Anyway, it’s still interesting reading.

This Filipino short story is told from the point of view of a construction worker who is in jail for arson. He tried to burn down the hospital that he helped build, because his baby died when his wife, Luding, gave birth in the hospital lobby.

They are poor, and he thinks that the nurses just told his wife (who was in labor) to just wait. He thinks that the nurses ignored his wife after they found out that Luding was not the wife of the rich Mr. Cajucom (who works at the BIR), but was just hitching a ride to the hospital.

Since no one was attending to Luding, she gives birth, and the baby hits her head on the cement floor and dies.

The construction worker signs a promissory note so that he can bring his wife home from the hospital. No one visits them during the wake of their deceased baby.

He buries his baby. He sees his wife staring off into space.

He goes to a bar and drinks. He goes to the hospital and pays off his debt. He tears the promissory note.

On his way out of the hospital, he decides to look at his surroundings one more time. He looks at the doctors and nurses and they appear as civet cats (alamid) who killed his baby.

He snaps. He goes to the second floor, enters a waiting room, vandalizes it, and burns it.

Someone sees him leaving the room, sees the smoke, sees the flames under the closed door, and correctly guesses what had happened.

He runs and gets caught and beaten by other hospital personnel and the security guard. He goes to jail.

The story ends with the construction worker telling his cellmate to go to sleep since it’s probably 10:00 in the evening. He talks about how you cannot see the sky, and how he no longer believes in heaven because God has forgotten him for a long time.

Isang kantero, naghalo ng semento at tumulong magpatayo ng isang ospital. Nung manganganak na ang asawa niyang si Luding, hindi sila inasikaso ng mga nars at duktor sapagkat mahirap lamang sila ni Luding. Analysis of Di Ko Masilip Ang Langit

Benjamin P. Pascual uses Filipino words that were probably popular during the 70s, which means Filipino students today will most likely have a hard time understanding some of those terms.

Even if they look through their not-that-thick dictionaries, they won’t find those words with reversed syllables.

For example, ob-lo means “loob” or “inside”, which is slang for “prison.”

As a result, the use of colloquial language makes the reader feel that the construction worker is genuinely speaking. The slang and language used makes you feel what the construction worker is feeling, especially if you’ve heard some of those terms before.

I highly suggest you read the story out loud (and with emotion), so that you will feel what I mean. In fact, don’t be surprised if your voice cracks when you reach the last line of the story.

In the future, I will post here some audio clips of some of the passages read out loud. Eh pag hindi mo pa naramdaman, ewan ko na lang.

CAUTION: Some of the language may be quite vulgar, such as when the construction worker describes the anatomy of his wife, Luding.

Yes, it is a depressing Filipino short story. And you’ll be amazed by the power of the spoken word. So please read the story out loud.

1. Forgot something. (nakalimutan)

The campaign is called “Reflect the Rainbow” (probably because there are so many differently colored Skittles), and the TVC shows a man getting measured by a Thai tailor for a suit. In front of the two men are three mirrors, each mirror showing a different customer.

Although we have 3 different customers reflected in the mirror, they mimic the main customer’s movements. After a while, however, the rightmost reflection stops and starts eating some Skittles. The tailor then berates the reflection in Thai, while the reflection answers back… in Tagalog!

Eh nagugutom ako eh. – Well I’m hungry.
Nagugutom na ako (eh) di kakain ako. – I’m hungry, so I’ll eat now.
Wag mo naman akong… – Please don’t (do something to, or treat) me…
P____ang ina, gutom…. – SOB! I’m hungry…
