Ibong Adarna Summaries – Part 5

Part 5 (Stanzas 1299 – 1722)

Since King Salermo has no other tasks to assign to Don Juan, he summons him so that Don Juan may choose who among the three princesses he will marry.

Since the faces of the princesses are covered, Juan may choose only by touching their fingers. Juan remembers that Maria Blanca is missing a finger, so he easily chooses her.

King Salermo notices the unusual closeness between Juan and Maria Blanca, and plans to have them banished to England. The couple elope and are able to escape from the king.

King Salermo breathes a curse on Maria Blanca: “You will be forgotten by Don Juan! He will leave you and marry someone else!” In the bewilderment of his grief, he sickens and dies, and is unable to witness the fulfillment of his curse.

Don Juan and Doña Maria Blanca reach the outskirts of the kingdom of Berbania. Don Juan temporarily leaves Maria Blanca so that he can tell his father, King Fernando, to have a group go and meet Maria Blanca.

Before he leaves, Maria Blanca warns him that if any woman approaches him, he will forget Maria Blanca. Juan promises that he will not allow any woman to come near him.

Unfortunately, as soon as Juan enters Berbania, Leonora goes near him. Can’t blame her, really, it’s been so many years, right? Juan forgets Maria Blanca (sounds similar to the Rings of the Niebelung, ‘no?), and he makes plans to marry Leonora.

Maria Blanca attends the celebration and requests that a program be held before the wedding ceremony begins. The program is dramatic play between negritos. The female negrito hits the male negrito with a stick and asks him if he remembers how Doña Maria Blanca helped him in the kingdom of King Salermo, her father.

Each blow does not hurt the negrito; instead, Don Juan feels the pain each time the negrita hits the negrito. Don Juan’s memory returns, and he remembers all that he and Maria Blanca went through.

The wedding is called off. Don Juan marries Doña Maria Blanca. Don Pedro marries Princess Leonora.

Juan and Maria Blanca return to the kingdom of Delos Cristal, where they rule with compassion and justice, over their people who love them.

(It’s not an ideal ending, but that’s how it ends.)

and this is seriously helping me review!
    so again thanks!:))

oh and maybe you could put translations of the complicated words in ibong adarna??

  14. on 02 Mar 2009 at 9:18 pm ria

ooooh!~ thanks that was definitely a life saver, i was first attempting to actually try to appreciate the art of filipino poetry but then again my diligence failed me… :(

perhaps there are grade 7 students in dlsz commenting here. thanks a bunch, final exams tomorrow… cant wait till summer. :(

  16. on 07 Mar 2009 at 5:51 pm eosophagus

    thanks for the notes.

but please remember that our stupid high school teachers ask annoyingly specific stuff, like how maria used her RING to summon the TWELVE KUTSEROs and LAKAYOs, and how she was dressed as an EMPERATRIS.

or how the de los cristales kingdom celebrated for NINE DAYS cause they didn’t celebrate for EIGHT YEARS under salermo.

or how maria asked juan not to go near his own MOM.

    and all that PRASKO stuff.

it wold really help if you add in those specific stuff. and if you would put tayutay notes, it would help a ton. if it’s possible, a tagalog translation would be best, since you can’t answer the stuff they give you in english D’:

    Your ending is wrong.

He doesn’t remember when the negritos come in, but when Maria Blanca gets frustrated and is about to throw a jar that will let out flood (or a curse — somethign like that) — she doesn’t do it… but that’s when he remembers.

ibong adarna might be a classic, but it isn’t any good. shame this is the standard for “philippine literature.” that or jose rizal. and i’m sick of him in school all the time!

  25. on 16 Jul 2009 at 4:18 pm first year student

wow! It’s really a good summary. But considering that I haven’t touched the book, it’ll have to do. I’m in charged of the script in our play. And I’m only in first year high school! I can’t even understand the Tagalog in that damned book! But thanks, it really is a big help.

  26. on 26 Jul 2009 at 2:43 pm senordap angel?

    Hello..
I’m a 1st year Highschool student..and we’re now starting to have lessons about Ibong Adarna and i shot a good impression on our Filipino teacher ‘cuz of this site!!!
    Thnx very much..
U know it’s so hard to understand words used from that “kurido” (or korido..WtEvr)..and it’s a great help that you’ve got an English summarization..
    but..
it says here in the book that Ibong Adarna has only 1715 stanzas, not 1722..tsk3
    And I noticed..each line has exactly 8 syllables..but anyway i love your grammar…Thanks again..

  46. on 23 Jan 2010 at 6:13 pm LI

BLAH!!! That’s why we’ve got teachers. To explain all of this to us. This may be helpful somehow to others. Yeah good work but anyways, why don’t you make a script for ibong adarna???? Tons of teachers and students need help with making the script with tagalog dialogues. It saves time for others and puts more time to work on practicing to give out a great outcome of the play!!!!
