Roy dela Cruz delivered a talk on writer’s block during iBlog 7 (7th Philippine Blogging Summit) yesterday at the UP College of Law. Here’s a video clip where you can enjoy Roy’s deadpan humor…

One of the main reasons for writer’s block is having a lot of distractions.
You’ll know this is true, especially after you read Roy’s Facebook killed the blogger.
If you are like other Filipino bloggers who dream of making your mark via the online world, it’s perfectly normal to sometimes get sidetracked by relatively more enjoyable activities such as keeping in touch with friends.
Writing requires effort, and sometimes may even evoke traumatic memories of school and stern English teachers. No wonder a lot of people would rather change the look of their blog, rather than publish even a 200-word blog post.
Clearly, the wall called writer’s block is something we build ourselves deep within. Brick by brick, layer by layer, we are experts at finding the materials needed to raise that de quatro or de sais solid wall, complete with a sign that says: “Relax…”
Yes, we’re talking about Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and other places where a quick Refresh gives us our daily or even hourly fix of the “latest.”
Sometimes, distractions have a way of making us forget the whole purpose or point of publishing online.
Take you, for example. Why did you get started blogging? What were you hoping to achieve? Has the possibly slow pace discouraged you from continuing?
While you need some amount of self-discipline to get over the occasional or even frequent hurdle of writer’s block, you have to reach inside, ask, and remind yourself what your purpose is.
Good luck, and I look forward to reading more of your blog posts soon! 🙂
